Cali Bunga
You’d better be brave if you’re going to ride the wave.
Hometown: Venice Beach, California
Birth date: I was born at high tide on the hottest day of the year, 1962.
Height/Weight: As if! Let’s just say that I’m no Gidget.
Derby DOB: May 18, 2011
Position: Deep Inside
Skate/Wheel/Socks: Sure Grip Boxers with green Hyper Shaman wheels, Gum Ball toe stops, and retro tube socks
Practice regimen: Surfing in skates whenever possible.
Signature Move: Cosmic Karmic Crush
Derby Heroes: The legendary Ann Calvello of San Francisco who skated in seven decades and last competed in 2002 at age 71 before passing away in 2006. She was an incredible athlete who in later life, when asked if it didn’t hurt too much to keep skating, responded that the only time she didn’t hurt was when she was on the track.
Favorite moments: The first time I successfully hip-checked a girl into next week, followed closely by the first time another girl successfully hip checked me into tomorrow.
Favorite Song to skate to: What else? Wipe Out by the Surfaris, of course.
Why Derby?: To strengthen the body, clear the mind, save the soul, and crush the Barbies!
Why this name and number?: Well, it’s good to have a name that people enjoy screaming. Plus, Cali Bunga is my salute to all the fierce female surfers who have gone before, fearlessly surfing every big wave that life brought their way. 360 is a rad surfing move in which both the board and rider spin in a complete circle. It’s kinda like karma in that what goes around comes around.
Likes: kind hearts, open minds, deep thinkers, and the ocean
Dislikes: willful ignorance, racism, intolerance, and cruelty
Non-Derby Hobbies: Surfing, swimming, sunning, snorkeling, sailing, and pretty much anything else that begins with an “s” that you can do in the water.
Bad Habits: Using smaller skaters as speed bumps.
Drink of choice: anything with rum in it
Turn ons: Pinko Commie Liberal philosophers
Turn offs: Republican businessmen
Favorite quote: That’s a tie between “It’s never too late to become what you might have been.” (George Eliot) and “You want a toe? I can get you a toe, believe me. There are ways, Dude. You don’t wanna know about it . . . Hell, I can get you a toe by 3 o’clock this afternoon . . . with nail polish.” (Walter Sobachak, The Big Lebowski)
